Abstract：The synthetic methods of twelve kinds of tartaric esters and the applications of tartaric esters in chiral auxiliaries, chiral ligands, synthesis of ligands as chiral pools and chiralselector extraction were reviewed with 69 references. Future research orientation and application prospect are proposed.
